Ben & Jerry’s is Giving Free Scoops This Monday

To celebrate the legalisation of same-sex marriage in Australia, beloved ice cream brand Ben & Jerry’s is giving away free scoops.

A long-time supporter of marriage equality, the company said in a statement: “It’s a history-making decision on an issue that has divided our nation for far too long, and we couldn’t be happier for our friends and family in the LGBTIQ community … We want to celebrate and we can’t think of a better way than with free ice cream!”

The Free Cone Night will take place on Monday, December 11 from 5.30pm to 9.30pm at participating shops across Sydney, including Hoyts Broadway, Hoyts Blacktown, Hoyts Chatswood, Hoyts Penrith, Ben & Jerry’s Manly, Ben & Jerry’s Chatswood and Ben & Jerry’s Bondi.

Oh, and the company also lifted the ban on getting two scoops of the same flavour, which is more apt than ever.

Black Star Pastry Opens A New Branch in Sydney’s East

Black Star Pastry has opened its fourth branch in Moore Park’s Entertainment Quarter, complete with two-level café and an open kitchen.

The 500-square-metre factory floor will house all of the cakery’s production, with high end tools such as an ultrasonic robot cake cutter and an egg splitting machine.

The upgraded infrastructure will enable the team to increase production and expand the menu to include a new range of savoury pies and other items. “Up until now if I wanted to do any creative work I’d have to get in at four in the morning and get out before the main guys turned up; it’s been very restrictive on our creativity,” said Christopher Thé, director at Black Star Pastry. “We have this back log of all these things we want to do.”

More new stuff are expected to arrive at this location soon, including a café menu consisting of salad bowls and bento boxes as well as dessert-wine matchings.

Black Star Pastry Moore Park opens every day at 210 Bent Street, the Entertainment Quarter.

Recipes: Best Tofu Dishes

Tofu has long been known as vegans’ ultimate protein source. However, it is also severely underappreciated as an ingredient on its own, despite its great taste and versatility. Tofu is not only nutritious, but it also can be used in every dish, from appetizer to (seriously) dessert. Here are a few recipes to get you started…

Crispy Baked Tofu by Cookie and Kate

This simple recipe requires only four ingredients. Perfect for party nibbles, or simply serve with rice.

Vegan Vietnamese Tofu Spring Rolls by Delish Knowledge

Paired with fresh chopped vegetables and peanut-lime sauce, these rolls are healthy without sacrificing the taste.

Tofu and Chickpea Sandwiches by She Likes Food

BBQ doesn’t have to be all meats and steaks. Sloppy but tasty!

Spicy Ramen with Tofu by Pinch of Yum

The firm tofu will absorb the flavours of the thick, spicy miso soup. Paired with the soft boiled egg and the sleek ramen noodles, this dish is heaven in a bowl.

Silken Tofu Panna Cotta in a Cherry Chocolate Sauce by Exceedingly Vegan

Silken tofu has been a substitute to cream in vegan recipes for a while now, but it’s definitely not inferior. The mixture of tofu and agar agar flakes creates the perfect wobbly texture that would please every panna cotta enthusiast.

Vegan Chocolate Pudding by Kathy Patalsky

Another dessert recipe using silken tofu. The recipe takes less than seven ingredients – simple and practical enough for even the absolute beginners to follow.

Gelato Messina Launches VHS Gelato Cake for Father’s Day

Have no idea what to gift your dad for Father’s Day? Why not a VHS-shaped ice cream cake?

To celebrate the holiday, Gelato Messina has launched a limited edition offering of VHS tape-shaped gelato-chocolate cake.

The cake, which is chocolate-orange flavoured, is layered with vermouth gelato, almond crunch, Negroni gel made with Archie Rose gin, and blood orange mousse. For the final touch, an edible VHS chocolate layer tops the cake – what’s not to love?

You can order the cake here – but be quick, it has sold out in numerous locations.
